A Symphony of Inclusion and Community

This holiday season, Brixton Chamber Orchestra (BCO) embarks on its sixth annual Christmas Estates Tour, bringing the gift of free concerts to 13 Lambeth housing estates between 8 & 21 December 2023.

‘Something for everyone’

With a 25-piece young and diverse orchestra with local singers and rappers, BCO redefines  ‘something for everyone’ with an hour-long set ranging from classical to grime, disco, pop, jazz and classic Christmas tunes to captivate residents of all ages.

More than a series of concerts, it’s a celebration of community spirit, offering communities the uplifting power of free live music. BCO actively encourages inclusivity with audience participation and an orchestral open-mic at the end of each show where anyone can take the stage and perform alongside the orchestra.

Young musicians from workshops at local schools, including Christ Church Streatham Primary School and Evelyn Grace Academy, will share the stage with BCO in special performances at their schools on 8 and 15 December.

Matthew O’Keeffe, Brixton Chamber Orchestra’s Artistic Director, says: “The Christmas Tour is my very favourite project! It’s a privilege to bring some seasonal magic to community halls. People love to sing along with a carol, and dance around to whatever else we’re rocking. Last year we played Dukas’ Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which really set the room off. This year we’re leading with the Overture to Strauss’ Fledermaus, and with any luck they’ll be waltzing into 2024!”
