Brixton: New paid work opportunities coming soon for young people

The Build the Way programme has been developed for the proposed 49 Brixton Station Road and 6 Canterbury Crescent scheme which is being carried out in partnership with house building firm London Square.

The programme has been designed to remove barriers to entry into the industry by offering paid placements, mentoring, professional skills training and hands-on experience across architecture and urban design.

Recruitment to the nine-month programme for five residents, aged 18- to 25-years-old, will start in the summer. It will give the young people the opportunity to work alongside building industry professionals, gain recognised qualifications and develop the skills and confidence needed to progress their careers.

Councillor Danny Adilypour, Lambeth’s Deputy Leader (Housing, Investment and New Homes), said: The proposed redevelopment of 49 Brixton Station Road and 6 Canterbury Crescent aims to create the high-quality, social rent and genuinely affordable homes that our residents urgently need. “However, it is equally important that this investment creates meaningful, lasting benefits for the wider Brixton community.

“It’s really positive that this project will provide paid, real-world opportunities for young people in Brixton, helping them to develop practical skills, confidence and clear pathways into careers within the built environment. I would encourage young people interested in this opportunity to register their interest ahead of the programme launching later this year.”

Final plans for Lambeth Council and London Square’s new mixed-use regeneration scheme at 49 Brixton Station and 6 Canterbury Crescent, in the heart of Brixton town centre, have been submitted following extensive community engagement.

The scheme is set to deliver, subject to planning permission being granted, 288 new homes, of which 98 will be at 100 per cent social rent, with a higher mix of larger homes, including almost a third proposed as three-bedroom homes and half as two-bedroom homes.

Upgrades to the public realm surrounding Pope’s Road, Brixton Station Road and Canterbury Crescent are proposed to create a safer and more welcoming environment for Brixton residents, businesses and visitors. New shops on Pope’s Road and Brixton Station Road, dedicated storage facilities for market traders, an enterprise and community hub and new workspace, including space at affordable rates, are also part of the wider proposals.”

Ricardo Rossetti, London Square’s Development Director, said: “Build the Way is about opening doors and creating real opportunities for young people, and we are committed to having a real, positive impact in the communities where we work.

“By supporting these traineeships for Brixton residents, we want to help local talent to gain skills, experience and confidence that can lead to long term careers. If you, a friend or a member of your family is finishing school this year or considering their career path, we encourage you to read more and register your interest.”

Build the Way works with a network of small and medium sized architectural practices and educators to deliver its programme, combining practical workplace experience with mentoring and structured learning. Trainees are paid the London Living Wage and supported throughout the programme to progress into further education, apprenticeships or employment.

The places will be part of the 2026/27 programme that starts in October 2026. Applications will open in July and the programme will start in the autumn.

Build the Way forms part of a wider Employment and Skills package to be delivered as part of the project.  Two Lambeth residents are already taking advantage of a six-week placement with Trium and with PTE Architects.  There are also opportunities for two six-week internships with structural engineering company, Conisbee and two six week placements at transport consultants, Velocity.

Whilst there will be construction and construction related roles available in the proposed scheme, London Square is already delivering within the borough, there is no need to wait to take up similar roles.  You can find out about the placements and roles at BeLambeth.
