Brockwell Hall restored: A new chapter begins for a historic Lambeth landmark

The restoration project was made possible thanks to a significant investment by Lambeth Council and a £3.9 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with additional support from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund.

Together, this funding has breathed new life into one of the borough’s most loved historic landmarks—transforming it into a vibrant hub for community, learning, sustainability and preserving it for future generations.

A fresh look and new purpose

This restoration project has preserved the integrity of Brockwell Hall while unlocking new spaces and uses for the community like never before. The new key features include:

  • A stunning interactive multi-purpose exhibition space in the main hall, which will showcase the building’s rich history, distinctive architecture, and the stories of the people who have shaped both the Hall and its surrounding park.
  • Volunteer and learning hub – a space dedicated to training, apprenticeships, and local engagement activities.
  • Café with a view – the café will offer refreshments in a newly enhanced setting.
  • A new multi-purpose event space in the restored stable yard, accommodating up to 160 people for weddings, workshops, exhibitions, and cultural events.
  • Eco-friendly heating – a ground source heat pump system to help power the hall using sustainable energy.
  • New offices and base for the park team for on-hand maintenance of the park, supporting local engagement and stewardship.

More than just a hall; wider park improvements

This restoration has also been a catalyst for wider improvements across Brockwell Park, ensuring the entire area flourishes. These include:

  • The planting of dozens of new trees, including a cherry avenue leading up to the hall and native hedge planting
  • Construction of a new wildlife pond in partnership in with volunteers from the Friends of Brockwell Park (FoBP) and with the support of the Brockwell Park Community Partners to support improving habitat for amphibians
  • Play area enhancements including a new zipwire
  • New drainage systems to reduce flooding
  • Installation of memorial benches, wildflower beds and more welcoming green spaces

Word from Lambeth Council: Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air

“The restoration of Brockwell Hall marks a proud moment for Lambeth. This project not only preserves a beautiful historic landmark but also breathes new life into Brockwell Park for future generations. Thanks to sustainable features like the new ground source heat pump, we are making Brockwell Hall a shining example of how we can honour our heritage while moving towards our Net Zero 2030 ambitions. I’m thrilled to see this iconic space reopening for the community to enjoy — a place where history, nature, and local life come together.”

Stuart McLeod, Director of England – London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said:

“It’s fantastic to see Brockwell Hall reopening after its transformational restoration project. Thanks to National Lottery players, this historic building has been saved and the much-loved Brockwell Park has seen great improvements for both the community and nature, just in time for the summer. At the Heritage Fund, we believe that heritage has the power to transform communities and this project is a great example of this, offering an important green space in Lambeth and somewhere where people can connect with the heritage on their doorsteps.”

After restoration and exciting improvements across Brockwell Park, we can’t wait to welcome you back to a beautifully transformed Brockwell Hall and a much-improved Brockwell Park.
