Try free gym sessions all day on 4 April to celebrate the Community Gym at Brixton Recreation Centre . As well as drop-in use of the gym all day, there’ll be free sessions throughout the day for over-55s, disabled people, women-only, and juniors.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Sonia Winifred, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Culture, said: “I am delighted with this initiative aimed at supporting our communities. The Community Gym is designed to welcome everyone to try a healthy lifestyle – if you’re starting out, going back to get fit in later life, or want to exercise in a safe environment, come and try out the free sessions on Thursday as a first step.”
10am – 12noon: Our expert Fitness Instructor and our Older Person Champion will deliver fitness classes free for members and non-members. Please book – spaces are limited
- Chair Aerobics 10:00 am to 10:45 am
- Total Body Conditioning 11:00 am to 11:45 am (cardio and conditioning for a high-energy workout)
12 noon – 1pm: For anyone with a disability. Our Fitness Instructor will provide guidance so you get the most out of your exercise, safely. Our staff will be on hand to provide tours of the centre and promote our weekly accessible activity programmes being delivered in leisure centres across the borough. This session will also provide those with a disability an opportunity to speak to us about other activities they would like to see available in our leisure centres and parks. Many of our cardio and resistance machines are IFI Accredited.
1:30 – 3pm: Mums and Dads, don’t miss out! Come down, try out the equipment. The adjacent studio will host a soft play area for children – so buddy up and take it in turns to watch each other’s children.
4 pm – 6:30 pm: We offer ages 8-15 designated gym workouts. A Fitness Instructor will create your programme of activities to meet individual goals, including cardio and core strength equipment.
4:30 pm – 5:15pm: Weightlifting Master Class coached by Lambeth GLL Sport Foundation funded athletes; Forrester Osei, the 2019 African Champion, and Stefano Cataldi, current British record holder for junior age groups. Forrester will be around before and after the class to discuss his experiences as an athlete.
6:30-10pm: The session will be joined by Rebecca Goodwin (Fifth place in the World Triathlon Championships 30-34 age group last year) and Len Demetriou (top five British weightlifting championships). Rebecca will run a circuit bootcamp 7-7:45pm – arrive early for a place. Or use the gym as you wish with training advice and tips on hand from Len.
Keep exercising after open day?
- Brixton Recreation Centre offers sessions in the Community Gym, separate from the main gym. Regular exercise improves your fitness and wellbeing, making you less prone to physical and mental health problems. Exercise is also a great way to socialise or meet new people.
