Community views to be sought as plans for Brixton Town Centre regeneration scheme progress

This follows a refresh of the agreement between Lambeth and London Square for the redevelopment of the two council-owned sites.

Designs for 49 Brixton Station and 6 Canterbury Crescent, which currently house meanwhile uses at both Pop Brixton and International House, are expected to deliver around 280 new homes, of which 40% will be affordable, alongside workspace, new street market infrastructure, commercial space and public realm improvements.

Community engagement and planning consultants, AND London, have been appointed to lead a comprehensive engagement programme for the project ahead of a planning application submission expected later this year.

Public events and workshops will take place between June and September. Residents, businesses and other local stakeholders will be invited to take part in a range of activities.

This will include opportunities to participate in a Community Advisory Board as well as pop up events and workshops to share and discuss aspects of the scheme, including the public realm, street market facilities and affordable workspace.

Councillor Danny Adilypour, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Housing, Investment and New Homes said: “Progressing this redevelopment is another significant step in our ambitious plans to bring desperately needed new homes and community improvements to the heart of Brixton, alongside our nearby Somerleyton Road Phase Two project.

Our agreement with our development partner, London Square, has been refreshed to ensure we deliver as many new homes as possible, but also respond to wider changes such as shifts in working patterns post COVID and changing economic conditions.

The agreement retains its focus on delivering benefits for our Brixton residents and communities, so I would encourage everyone to get involved in the range of community engagement work that will begin shortly to finalise plans for the future scheme ahead of a planning application submission.”

Adam Lawrence, Chief Executive Officer, London Square, said: “We’ve been a proud partner to Lambeth Council on this scheme since 2022. Getting this project right and delivering the homes, facilities and street-level improvements Brixton needs now and in the future is incredibly important to us. We’ve incorporated suggestions from the community from previous rounds of engagement and look forward to hearing and discussing further local feedback on the scheme before we progress to a planning application later this year.”
