Council renews ambitions to help young people with SEND receive excellent outcomes

The Strategy, which runs from 2025-2030, was designed with young people and aims to provide the best care and support for any special educational needs and disabilities. It will also enable children and young people to achieve their full adult potential. We are committed to ensuring every child gets the right help as early as possible, with schools, health services, and other support systems working together seamlessly.  We will continue to engage with young people and listen to their needs through our SEND Young Inspectors Programme, our new SEND Youth Forum, and other exciting youth participation opportunities.

Councillor Ben Kind, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education said: “This strategy, developed with young people, families, and schools, is a key step in our ambition to make Lambeth one of the best places for children and young people to grow up. It sets out how we will strengthen support for children and young people with SEND, ensuring they have access to high-quality education, the right opportunities, and the tailored support they need to thrive.

“Lambeth Council is committed to inclusive education and making sure no child is left behind. Despite the financial challenges facing councils after over a decade of underfunding, we are determined to invest in SEND provision, improve early intervention, and work with schools to make mainstream settings more inclusive. We welcome the government’s commitment to SEND reform, and will continue to push for the fair funding and systemic change needed to deliver the best outcomes for all children and young people in Lambeth.”

The report has seven key priorities, all decided with the input of Lambeth’s young people:

  •  Inclusive and Sustainable Provision
  • Effective Partnership Working
  • Smooth Transitions with Early Preparation
  • Earlier Preparation for Adulthood:
  • Developing Our Workforce Across the Partnership
  • Amplifying the Voice of Children, Young People, and Families
  • Timely Re-integration to Mainstream for Those in Alternative Provision
