Crowdfund Lambeth pledge helps Papa’s Park shine again

Crowdfund Lambeth match-funded pledges from 35 local funders with £1,000 to help raise more than £2,400 to pay for essential repairs to the playground in Papa’s Park.

Play all day

Papa’s Park is a community-run garden, playground and cafe in the heart of Brixton. The park is run by a committee of 12 dedicated volunteers plus many, many friends and neighbours who help look after it from about 9am until dusk each day.

But in the five years since the last update, the beloved children’s play area and sports pitch, the heart and soul of the park, were showing signs of wear and tear.

Plans for Papa’s

Co-chair of the crowdfunding campaign Jennifer Fleetwood, said: “Papa’s is an independent charity and we get no core funding from the council. £2,000 would cover essential repairs like levelling the ground where it’s become uneven. £5,000 would cover all repairs, including replacing worn ropes and fencing, and even self-closing mechanisms on gates.”

Within 56 days of launching the crowdfunder, the total raised was £2,142 (and £227.50 gift aid) contributed by 35 supporters.

A place for people

Jennifer says: “Funds will be used to do essential repairs in the park this spring and summer.

“We’ve been amazed by the support of our community and neighbours. A massive thanks to everyone for their donation and for Lambeth’s brilliant match funding.

“At Papa’s we know space to play is vital to health, but also that parks are not just about exercise – they are places to make new friends, share your struggles, to relax and to feel like you belong. I can’t imagine life without Papa’s.”
