Healthy Living Platforms aims to empower the vibrant LGBTQ+ community within Lambeth to start something new – six free weeks of training to become Food Ambassadors.
Lambeth’s first LGBTQ+ Food Ambassadors
The Census reveals that Lambeth boasts the highest percentage of LGBTQ+ residents (8.3%) in London. HLP are launching the LGBT Food Ambassadors initiative, celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community through the lens of food education and communal cooking.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Jim Dickson, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, said: “We know the importance of showing diverse communities our unwavering support and providing them with valuable tools for empowerment and connection.
“This programme serves as a testament to Lambeth’s commitment to inclusivity and celebrating diversity. By harnessing the shared passion for food, we hope both to strengthen individual well-being, and nurture a more vibrant and interconnected Lambeth LGBTQ+ community.”
Five learning areas
The free Food Ambassadors programme equips10 participants with essential culinary skills, fosters a strong sense of belonging, and promotes sustainable food practices for a healthier tomorrow through learning in five key areas:
1. Culinary Mastery: essential cooking skills through interactive demonstrations and hands-on practice, crafting healthy, delicious meals.
2. Sustainable Flavour: explore eco-conscious food choices, empowering participants to minimize food waste and embrace greener kitchens.
3. Building Bridges: a safe and inclusive space where participants can share experiences and cultivate lasting friendships within the LGBTQ+ community.
4. Sharing the Bounty: As a grand finale, participants cater and host a gathering for friends and family, showcasing cooking skills and community spirit.
5. Supportive Circle: Recognizing the challenges individuals may face, the program offers optional confidential counselling sessions throughout the journey.
Connections
At the heart of the LGBT Food Ambassadors program lies a powerful idea: using the universal language of food to forge connections and strengthen social cohesion within a community that is often underrepresented and seeking solidarity, using newfound talents as a bridge to connect with each other and their wider communities. The course will be repeated depending on the number of LGBTQ+ people who sign up.
