Kids competition to name West Norwood playground and green space

Local under-16s are invited to rename the popular green space and playground area next to West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre. The naming competition – co-ordinated by partners Lambeth Council and healthcare investor Fulcrum – runs 5 to June 30 with great prizes up for grabs.

Finding a name

Naming suggestions could reflect local history, honour famous faces (past and present) from West Norwood, or recognise local ‘unsung heroes’ such as teachers, nurses or community workers who supported local residents through the challenges of the last few years.

The judging journey

  • Community group ‘Friends of West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre’ will shortlist 10 suggestions. This Top 10 will win prizes including West Norwood Leisure swim passes and local Picture House vouchers.
  • The 10 go to a public vote for overall winner. The chosen name wins 12 months’ Family Better Leisure membership for Lambeth.
  • The green space – founded in 2014 along with the Centre – will be officially renamed this summer.

Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Leisure, and Sports, said“We’re delighted to launch this competition, and to get the ball rolling in creating a new name for this well-loved part of the local community. With some great prizes available, and the chance to help name part of West Norwood, we encourage local children to get involved.”

Word from the partnership

Andrew Rowlands, Fulcrum General Manager, said: “The playgrounds and green space around the health and leisure centre have become a thriving place for residents and families, so it’s only right that we give local children the chance to help name this popular green area. West Norwood has a rich history and an amazing community spirit so we can’t wait to see some of the naming suggestions.”
