Lambeth’s vision for alternative provision is to ensure as many children and young people as possible are educated in mainstream schools.
A new ‘Alternative Provision and Intervention Guide and Gateway Form’ has been developed for schools to boost early interventions designed to prevent exclusions.
Alternative Provision is a type of education that sits outside of schools. It is usually arranged by local authorities or schools and organised for students who are not able to receive suitable education because of exclusion, illness or other reasons.
For children placed in Alternative Education Provision we the council is committed to ensuring high-quality education with a broad and balanced curriculum.
The aim is to ensure they can go back to mainstream schools as soon as appropriate and that the child or young person has the support they need.
There are now three tiers of support available to local schools covering behaviour and inclusion support, short term placements, and transitional placements.
A weekly Primary and Secondary Inclusion panel has been established to make sure that all referrals are thoroughly dealt with. The panel includes representatives from across the council to bring a range of experience and expertise.

By investing in increased support for children and young people facing challenges, Lambeth aims to eradicate the need for permanent exclusions in our schools. Our emphasis on early intervention and accessible support aligns with the need to prioritise inclusive education for all.
Working in partnership with our excellent schools, Lambeth Council will ensure that every child receives the necessary assistance to flourish within mainstream education, bringing us closer to ending the use of permanent exclusions while fostering a nurturing environment where every young person can thrive and reach their full potential.”
