The awards recognise the huge contributions made by both unpaid and professional carers in the community. There are over 18,000 unpaid carers in Lambeth, who look after family and friends who couldn’t get by without their support. A carer is anyone who provides unpaid assistance to a friend or loved one due to illness, disability, mental health issues, or addiction.

Councillor Jeremy Isaacs, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care (job-share) said: “Unpaid Carers in Lambeth and across the UK give so much to their loved ones and communities. We believe it is important to highlight their hard work and celebrate them.
“Not only do the Carers Awards seek to say thank you to people who provide care, they also raise awareness of what caring is, so that people who might not realise that they are a carer can reach out for support they might not know is available to them.
“The awards are part of the council’s commitment to making visibility, recognition, identification and awareness of carers one of our seven priorities for supporting carers in Lambeth.”
That focus on recognition and support was recognised recently by the Care Quality Commission, who rated Lambeth’s Adult Social Care Services ‘Good’ and praised the council’s support for unpaid carers, who they said receive “good information and advice to support them with their needs” and reflected that most unpaid carers were ‘happy with the care and support they received from the local authority”
