Lambeth Council secures Top 100 spot on Stonewall’s list for leading LGBTQ+ inclusive employers

Stonewall, Europe’s largest charity for lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) rights, launched their Top 100 Employers List for 2024, recognising exceptional employers who are committed to supporting their LGBTQ+ staff and customers

Word from the Cabinet

Leader of Lambeth Council Cllr Claire Holland said:  “Lambeth fully supports Stonewall’s message that by championing LGBTQ+ inclusion at work,  working with the local community to provide safe spaces and celebrate Lambeth’s rich and vital LGBTQ + history, and valuing our LGBTQ+ residents, we are helping to create a UK where LGBTQ+ people can thrive as their true selves.”

Silver Award winners

Lambeth Council was ranked 79 out of 246 organisations entering this year, winning a silver award, being recognised for working towards creating an inclusive working environment, and moving up from 166th in 2022 into Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers. The awards event on 15 July lets Lambeth discuss the future with other Top 100 employers from public, private and third sectors, including last year’s top-rated LGBTQ+ employer.

Bringing ourselves to work

We all perform best when we feel comfortable bringing our full selves to work – and for LGBTQ+ people, that means not having to hide who you are or who you love. The challenges that can hold LGBTQ+ people at work affect us all. The majority of Britons support LGBTQ+ people, and many have LGBTQ+ loved ones.

But more than a third of LGBT staff (35 per cent) have hidden who they are at work for fear of discrimination. This means LGBTQ+ people often feel that they have limited options when applying for jobs – or that the work culture isn’t for them when they do land a job.

Inclusive practices and policies

Stonewall’s Colin Macfarlane said: “Implementing inclusive practices and policies is vital for employers who wish to attract and retain top LGBTQ+ talent. The Workplace Equality Index draws participants from diverse industries and sectors, all of whom understand that inclusivity is the future and are leading the way in this vital change.”
