“Lambeth council has just passed a motion pledging to protect Lambeth’s residents, children and workers from the climate emergency. The Government’s decision directly undermines our commitments and makes it harder to take any meaningful action on the climate crisis.
“Having just come through our hottest summer on record its clear this crisis is very real and present. Residents endured weeks of extreme heat and drought, which saw record numbers of emergency hospital visits, schools forced to close, workers forced to endure stifling heat, and our parks and green spaces scorched beyond recognition.
“The climate emergency is accelerating, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, which is why we are deeply concerned about this decision.
“In Lambeth we will host a Climate Emergency Summit in 2027, bringing together councils and representatives from across the political spectrum to build cross-party support for a coordinated response to the climate crisis, with a major focus on strengthening resilience to extreme heat.
“We will use this summit to inform a new climate resilience plan that will set out what action the council will take to protect the people of Lambeth from the health impacts of climate change, while setting out what action is needed by other levels of government and corporations.”
