Lambeth Council to invest £1.7 million in library refurbishment and innovation

Lambeth’s ten libraries provide essential services and community spaces for thousands of residents.

Recent refurbishment works have already taken place at Durning and Streatham libraries, and a £1million overhaul of Brixton library was completed in August.

This latest investment marks the start of a major and ongoing programme of refurbishment and asset replacement across all libraries.

Councillor Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said: “Our libraries are at the heart of Lambeth’s communities.

“This significant investment ensures our libraries remain fit for the future, offering not just books and learning resources, but vital community spaces for events, technology access, and personal development.

“We are committed to modernising our libraries, making them more accessible, and exploring new ways to generate income, all while maintaining their role as inclusive and welcoming places for all residents.”

In addition to structural improvements, the latest investment will help libraries innovate and put them on a firm footing for the future with new income opportunities.

The £1.7million will be allocated across several projects, including:

  • £850,000 for the redevelopment and refurbishment of South Lambeth, Clapham, and Minet libraries, to create additional lettable spaces, refurbish existing areas, address water ingress issues, and upgrade electrical and heating installations at Minet Library.
  • £40,000 to improve soundproofing in event rooms across the library network.
  • £250,000 to replace shelving and furniture.
  • £360,000 for the installation of hearing loops, replacement of self-service kiosks, health check machines, and upgrades to audio-visual equipment to improve accessibility for all.
  • £200,000 to replace racks and upgrade public access PCs and laptops, ensuring libraries remain digitally inclusive.
