Lambeth Council is progressing its commitment to become a Living Wage Place as part of ongoing efforts to tackle inequality, to ensure local people get fair pay and help make sure all working people in Lambeth are able to provide for families and loved ones.
A Living Wage Place is somewhere paying employees the Living Wage is the norm. In Lambeth hundreds of employers have already signed up to London Living Wage which is an hourly rate of pay, currently set at £13.15.
It is calculated independently to reflect the high cost of living in the capital, giving a worker in London and their family enough to afford the essentials and to save.
The council has been working with local businesses, charities and community leaders since June as part of a Living Wage Action Group. The group has now created an Action Plan which is a vital first step on the path to making Lambeth a Living Wage Place by 2025.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Marcia Cameron, Lambeth Cabinet Member for Economic Inclusion, said: “The Living Wage is so important in tackling poverty wages and also benefits businesses, helping with staff recruitment, retention and boosting customer confidence.
“We’re now making good progress on taking the steps needed to make sure that paying a decent wage is a default for employers in Lambeth. Achieving this will make such a difference to many people’s lives and help tackle the persistent low pay issues too many of our residents still face.”
Action Plan
A Living Wage Action Plan includes a list of actions and pledges, sets targets for increasing the number of Living Wage employers and workers in the borough and details which sectors and businesses should be targeted as part of a campaigning approach to get them signed up as accredited Living Wage employers.
