An old warehouse and former roller disco in Vauxhall will become a vibrant community hub that supports Lambeth’s economy, improves infrastructure, and promotes inclusivity.
The proposed scheme on Wyvil Road is very close to Nine Elms tube station and will provide 347 new homes, 46 of which will be at council-level rent, along with a contribution of over £14m from the developer to be used to deliver affordable housing in the borough. There will also be 366 square metres of affordable workspace which will attract entrepreneurs to the borough and support Lambeth’s small businesses.
The redevelopment of the site will create a residential-led community in Vauxhall marking
a significant step towards providing much-needed housing and community resources.
The developers will also contribute £51,750 towards healthy routes and over £150,000 to improving local play and open spaces, encouraging active travel and well-being and supporting Lambeth’s commitment to sustainability.
Another project receiving the green light from Lambeth’s Planning Application Committee is an innovative co-living and employment hub in Herne Hill and Loughborough Junction. The redevelopment of Hardess Yard will transform the area into a dynamic space for living and working while preserving its industrial heritage providing 40 jobs with modern light industrial units.
The proposed co-living accommodation has private rooms with shared common spaces and amenities providing flexible housing choice for renters, with Lambeth to receive £9.1 million from the developer which will be used to deliver affordable housing elsewhere in the borough. Over £480,000 has been secured for local public transport improvements alongside other contributions towards open space, cycle hire and employment and skills opportunities.
Word from the Cabinet
Councillor Danny Adilypour, Lambeth’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Investment and New Homes said:
“I’m delighted that the Planning Applications Committee is supporting these exciting projects which embody our vision for all residents to have access to and benefit from safe, secure and high-quality homes as we strive to make Lambeth a place we can all call home.
“Here in Lambeth we are determined to continue to tackle the severe housing shortage crippling our borough due to the lack of investment by previous governments in new affordable housing. It’s very exciting that nearly 50 new council-level rent homes will be built in Vauxhall.
“Our Housing Strategy sets out our ambition to deliver an additional minimum of 500 new council homes on land we own by 2030. Each new home is a lifeline for those who would otherwise be left on our waiting list or in overcrowded or insecure housing.
“People, not buildings, are central to the vision for both of these projects and an employment and skills programme will ensure local residents gain access to new jobs and training opportunities.
“These projects promise to bring substantial benefits to Lambeth, from creating new homes and jobs to enhancing local infrastructure and sustainability initiatives. They reflect Lambeth’s commitment to community well-being and environmental responsibility.
