The council’s library service is teaming up with librarians across London to launch a new app to get people reading more, taking inspiration from the “Couch to 5k” fitness plan.
Personalised plans
The Read On app uses curated recommendations, reading challenges, interactive quizzes and personalised reading plans to gradually make reading a regular part of users’ lives. It’s designed not only to get people reading more books, but to introduce them to different genres, authors and styles to enjoy. A map feature helps readers find London’s libraries, attend literary events and connect with other book lovers.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, said: “If you love reading but your books are in a growing ‘to be read’ pile, or you just haven’t read a book in years, Read On will get you back on the road to an endless supply of stories and knowledge – discovering the joy of reading and boosting your own wellbeing as you go.”
Gateway to a universe
Aimed at Londoners wanting to read more (and 2023’s research shows 51% of British readers do), Read On is a digital gateway to a universe of books, crafted with care by London librarians. Rachel Levy, Head of Barbican & Community Libraries, who led the project says: “People want to read but feel they don’t have time, or get distracted. Read On is there to hold your hand as you gradually increase the number and range of books you read with realistic, achievable goals.”
Reading tor good health
Research shows that reading for pleasure can reduce stress and depression, increase self-esteem and improve ability to cope with difficult situations. Adults who read for just 30 minutes a week are 20% more likely to report greater life satisfaction. The app goes live just in time for the summer holidays, when people read to relax, and aims to turn the “beach read” into a year-round habit.
Lambeth residents can download the iOS and Android app or visit any Lambeth library to find out more.
