The cohesion event will follow the council’s Black History Month programme being held this month with a series of cultural community events, exhibitions and discussions to celebrate the borough’s strong and proud African and Caribbean heritage.

The council is also currently carrying out a review of its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work to ensure the council is doing everything possible to reflect and support the borough’s diverse communities.

Cllr Martin Abrams, the Leader of Lambeth Council, said: “I am so proud to lead one of the most diverse Boroughs in the UK but our work to combat racism and indeed all kinds of hatred must never stop as we live in turbulent times meaning that we must work harder, and do everything we can, to build community cohesion and create a safe place for all of our residents following the recent rise in antisemitism and islamophobia.

“We are taking on that incredibly important responsibility in partnership with faith groups, community leaders and our residents. As council we are also looking at ourselves and being proactive to reach the highest standards of awareness.”

Lambeth’s Community Cohesion event will be held on November 11 and will see Lambeth Council’s Cabinet members join faith leaders, community representatives and residents. It will be an opportunity to discuss the challenges communities face and share a message of unity.

The new training for Lambeth’s elected councillors will build on the existing equality, diversity and inclusion sessions that they are expected to be completed as part of representing the borough.
