Lambeth Council has written to Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, to highlight that the borough is proud to be the home of the Windrush generation, its campaigning to improve the lives of the Windrush generation, and to highlight the borough’s Windrush Day 2022 festival.

The letter also draws attention to local concern about a lack of local funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for the Windrush Day celebrations. The council has shared feedback from Lambeth groups and the local community that the Windrush Day Grant Scheme lacked transparency of decision-making, was late, and saw most Lambeth bids rejected.

In the letter from Cllr Claire Holland, Lambeth’s Leader, and Cllr Jacqui Dyer, Lambeth’s Deputy Leader, the Secretary of State is urged to address the situation and not ignore local communities ahead of the 75th anniversary Windrush day celebrations in 2023.
