Lambeth stonework and building restoration company Szerelmey have recently joined the growing numbers of Accredited London Living Wage employers working in the borough. Gauri Yennawar, Business Development and Marketing Manager, explains why and how.
“Although we have paid our employees above the Living Wage for as long as I can remember, it is really important to us to be recognized for it. Also, and perhaps more importantly it means we can put pressure on our supply chain to ensure that they are all also paying Living Wage. We are really proud to be able to display the Living Wage Employer accreditation on our website.
Building based in Lambeth
“Szerelmey is a stonework and restoration company based in Vauxhall. Working mostly as a subcontractor, we design, supply and install external cladding in a range of materials (not just stone), internal applications such as bathrooms, spas, flooring and walls and hard landscaping. Our clients tend to be large developers and main contractors. We also offer a full building restoration and refurbishment service with one of our largest projects to date the interior restoration and modification of Battersea Power Station.
“Our offices have been based here in Vauxhall for over 25 years. We trace back to 1855 when we were established by Col Nicholas Szerelmey, a colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army who was passionate about restoration, but we have been owned by our current owners since 1971.
Applying for accreditation
“The process for applying for the Living Wage Employer accreditation was reasonably straight forward, and Lambeth Council were on hand to assist with it, although we were able to do it ourselves.
“We would definitely recommend that other businesses become Living Wage accredited –, there is no downside to it.”
