The council is accelerating its Highways Asset Improvement Programme, with works taking place between now and Spring 2025 to resurface roads and footways to reduce the danger from cracks and potholes, and make them more accessible everyone.
The works have been designed to keep disruption to a minimum while resurfacing work takes place at locations that have been identified as requiring the most urgent repairs. Other works include repairing road drains, repainting road markings and upgrades to street lighting where necessary.
Road users will benefit from new surfaces that will remove potholes and provide a more even surface to drive or ride on, which could further reduce damage to vehicles and risks to cyclists.
The work on pavements will eliminate trip hazards and provide greater accessibility for everyone, particularly those with additional mobility needs.
The highway network in Lambeth accounts for around 315 linear kilometres of road – around 195 miles in total – that need to be regularly maintained.
The council believes the investment will also bolster the local economy by improving the infrastructure around town centres to support local businesses.
Deputy leader Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, cabinet member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said: “The council takes its responsibilities to maintain its road network very seriously. we regularly assess the condition and take action on repairs as quickly as possible.
“Regular maintenance greatly reduces the danger to road users and the risk of more costly repairs being required.
“Badly maintained roads increase liabilities for drivers and can also discourage people from walking or cycling. We are committed to supporting people to make more sustainable, car-free journeys and good quality surfaces is an important factor in this.
“These works will benefit everyone who uses our road network or footways, we will work with residents and businesses to make sure disruption during the works is kept to a minimum and will be letting people know in advance if our teams are working in their area.”
