Lambeth: Extra funding to improve the energy efficiency of council homes

The latest funding comes from two government energy efficiency schemes: the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund and Warm Homes: Local Grants.

The work will be carried out at the Blenheim Gardens Estate in Brixton and Leigham Court Estate in Streatham cutting bills and reducing emissions. It will feature new insulation, draught proofing and windows, as well as solar panels and more modern energy efficient lighting.

This follows almost 700 homes across the borough, which have already been upgraded as part of a national scheme to retrofit socially rented properties, and investment awarded for Blenheim Gardens Estate and Tivoli Road in May 2024.

The funding Lambeth has secured is part of a partnership between 27 London boroughs and housing associations.

Further measures for privately owned homes will also be made available under a Greater London Authority scheme.

It will support energy savings measures for low-income households in privately owned or privately rented homes with poor energy efficiency ratings. Applicants could get up to £15,000 to help with retrofit improvements.

Information on how to apply for private homes will be available soon.

Word from Cabinet

Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said: “I’m pleased we have secured this new funding and are able to improve more council houses.

“The improvement works should not only cut bills and cut emissions, it should also help tackle issues like damp and mould.”

The work supports Lambeth’s Climate Action Plan, which was published in March 2022, and sets out the aim of retrofitting all of Lambeth’s existing buildings to an average Energy Performance Certificate level C or higher by 2030.

The council will begin to deliver the schemes in April 2025 and complete them over the next three to five years.
