Lambeth Council, in partnership with the Kevin Campbell Foundation and Morleys Department Store, is pleased to announce that Itaewon (Jake Attewell) will create the mural, which will honour Kevin’s achievements on and off the pitch while celebrating his lifelong connection to Brixton.
Councillor Martin Abrams, Leader of Lambeth Council, said:
“Kevin Campbell was one of Brixton’s own. He achieved success at the very highest level of football, but he never lost sight of where he came from or the importance of giving back to his community.
We’re proud to be working alongside the Kevin Campbell Foundation, Morleys and the artist to create a landmark that will inspire future generations, celebrate Brixton’s rich cultural heritage and remind young people that great things can come from our communities.”
The mural will be painted on the exterior of Morleys Department Store, creating a lasting tribute to one of Lambeth’s most celebrated sporting figures. Installation is scheduled to begin during the week commencing 24 August.
Lorna Campbell, from the Kevin Campbell Foundation, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with Itaewon to create this special tribute to Kevin. From the beginning, we wanted the mural to celebrate not only everything Kevin achieved in football, but also the values he lived by and the community he loved. We hope it becomes a place where people can remember Kevin, celebrate his legacy and learn more about the work of the Kevin Campbell Foundation.”
Itaewon said:
“Kevin’s journey from Brixton to the very top of English football is an inspiring story, and it’s a privilege to help tell that story through public art. I want to create something that feels authentic to Brixton and reflects both Kevin’s achievements and the impact he had on so many people.”
Widely known as ‘Super Kev’, Campbell was admired not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his commitment to supporting others and giving back to the community throughout his life. The Kevin Campbell Foundation was established to continue Kevin’s legacy by creating opportunities for children and young people through sport, mentoring and community initiatives. Alongside celebrating Kevin’s life, the mural will help raise awareness of the Foundation’s ongoing work and the positive impact it continues to make.
The project forms part of Lambeth Council’s wider commitment to supporting the borough’s creative economy and using public art to celebrate local stories, strengthen pride in place and create vibrant public spaces.
