Lambeth is moving forward with the next phase of improving bus journey times across several key transport routes in the borough. With funding from Transport for London’s Bus Priority Programme, the council aims to improve bus journeys, speed up buses, and create safer and cleaner streets.
To make sure these improved bus routes work for our communities, Lambeth is launching design engagement phases for proposals for the Acre Lane, Norwood Road, Streatham Common North and Croxted Road corridors. The new designs will be featured on Lambeth’s Have Your Say pages, and residents are encouraged to complete the online survey from 21 September to 18 October.
Feedback from the engagement will be incorporated into the designs, which aim to:
- Speed up and improve the reliability of bus journeys
- Reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality
- Make it safer and easier to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport
- Support better access to local shops and businesses.
The council is working with TfL and their Bus Priority Corridor Programme, focusing on roads where bus journeys typically fall below the average speed targets set by the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan. The Mayor’s Bus Action Plan aims to create a network of key bus corridors in central London to deliver reliable average speeds of 10-13mph.

Cllr Ciara Alleyne, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency and Future Generations, said: “We want to make sure our bus routes work for our communities and can be depended on as a public transport service.
“Buses need to be a reliable and dependable service for our residents. Giving buses priority also reduces congestion, leading to cleaner, healthier air and safer roads to walk, cycle and scoot.
“These designs go the next step in prioritising buses so people can get to where they need to go safely and reliably.”
