The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together pupils from neighbouring Jessop Primary School, Lambeth Council and representatives of the Friends of Milkwood Community Park.
School council members shared a moving story about the vital role the playground plays in their daily lives and the importance of outdoor play spaces for young people.
Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Leisure, and Sports, said: “We were delighted to open this new playground in partnership with the community and it’s great to see it being so well used already.
“Lambeth is proud of its network of parks and green spaces and we’re doing everything we can to invest in them for the good of the whole community.”
Maude Estwick, Honorary Patron of the Park, then described to attendees a meeting with Prince Charles, now King Charles III, when the park originally opened, before cutting the ribbon to officially declare the refurbished playground open.
Following the ceremony, children enjoyed an energetic play session exploring the new facilities, after which they received healthy goodie bags generously supplied by Kompan, the company that built the playground.
The £50,000 refurbishment project was funded through Section 106 developer contributions, demonstrating how community infrastructure levies can directly benefit local residents and create lasting improvements to neighbourhood amenities.
The upgraded playground is now open to the public and represents a significant investment in the health, wellbeing, and outdoor recreation opportunities for families across Herne Hill.
