A young intrepid resident from West Norwood, Rianne Yeboah-Cornelius, 16 is setting her sights on sailing a Tall Ship on the first leg of the Tall Ships Regatta next spring, from Greenwich London – Sines Portugal, in spite of never having ever sailed in open water.
Rianne, an A Level student and Young resident of the Year finalist in this year’s Lambeth Community Pride Awards, has been selected to take part in the Sail Training experience and train as a crew member on-board one of the 40 international fleet of tall ships competing in the first leg of the Tall Ships race in April 2017. “It’s a unique opportunity so I jumped at the chance to take part. Sailing is quite an elitist sport and is not your typical pursuit associated with a young black female from the inner-city. I wanted to challenge myself personally, whilst inspiring other young people – my age and younger to seize similar opportunities and challenge negative stereotypes.
