Fundraising efforts are continuing across the borough, which is proudly home to a large British Caribbean community with strong ties to Jamaica and the wider region.
Local fundraising includes a donation-drive by Brixton Soup Kitchen and a special Reggae and Food Festival fundraiser organised by City Splash at Freight Rooftop in Brixton this Saturday.
During a visit to the Windrush Untold Stories Exhibition, which is currently on display at the UK Home Office, Cllr Donatus Anyanwu said:
“Our thoughts are with every single family affected by Hurricane Melissa, which has caused huge disruption and sadly led to the loss of life across Jamaica.
I know everyone in Lambeth stands with Jamaica through this difficult time – this is deeply personal for many people in our borough with loved ones living on the island. Ever since the storm hit our community has been stepping up with fundraisers and donations for those in need. We would encourage you to donate to the disaster appeals, every donation makes a difference.”
