Winter can be challenging for the NHS, especially for urgent care services. The seasonal increase in hospital admissions can mean hospital resources need to be diverted to Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments. The holiday period from 24 December to 2 January is particularly challenging as many GP practices and pharmacies close for all or part of this period.
Sharing the know-how to keep yourself well
The Age UK Lambeth “Warm and Well in Winter” campaign is designed to reduce the number of older and vulnerable people who become so ill they need to go to hospital. Our goal is to ensure that older people who are most at risk know how what they can do to keep out of hospital this winter. We support the key messages of the PHE Stay Well this Winter campaign.
Community group grants
Age UK Lambeth are now taking applications for grants for the 2017/18 Warm and Well in Winter campaign. The grants are for community groups and organisations who put on social events for older people to raise awareness of the importance of staying warm during the colder months.
The campaign runs from 1 November to 31 January. Age UK offers up to 40 grants of up to £200 (average £120). If you don’t work directly with a community group that wants to share the ‘keep warm, keep well’ message, but know one, then please share this with them and ask them to apply!
Support from Age UK
Age UK Lambeth will help you get the message across at these events. They will talk about techniques for staying warm and well and about money available for older people who are concerned about paying their heating bills. Our speaker will talk for no more than 15 minutes at each community group that gets the grant. All event attendees are given a FREE Age UK Lambeth insulated mug with useful flyers inside.
