This weekend will see Small Business Saturday celebrate of local businesses and their vital role in our community that give the borough its character and charm.

Lambeth backs Small Business Saturday

This annual event, falling on the first Saturday in December, encourage residents and visitors to avoid larger retailers for the day and instead visit smaller businesses to do their shopping.

Last year’s event saw UK shoppers spend an estimated £774million with small or independent businesses.

Cllr Irfan Mohammed, Deputy Cabinet Member for Business, said: “As a borough we value our small businesses, and I would encourage you to show that appreciation by shopping local on Small Business Saturday.

“Our support of small businesses directly contributes to the diversity and strength of our local economy, and I look forward to seeing lots of people exploring their local, independent stores this Saturday.”

A wide variety of free business support webinars are also available for small businesses in the borough. This includes webinars such as “Creating a Change: A guide to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Small Businesses” on 27 November from 11:00-12:00 and “Grow Your Sales in 2024!” on 29 November from 11:00-12:00.

This weekend will see a variety of events taking place from festive light switch-ons to showcases for some of the borough’s most unique businesses.

Small Businesses Saturday highlights in Lambeth include:

  • The Black Culture Market at the Department Store in Brixton
  • The festive lights switched on at Babington Plaza in Streatham
  • Local Portuguese businesses in South Lambeth Road such as Lisboa Pattiserie and the Wedding House Pattiserie

Organiser of the Black Culture Market Jen Baptiste said: “As we embrace the spirit of Small Business Saturday, The Black Culture Market is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit within Brixton and Lambeth.

“With 60 dedicated traders, each offering a unique piece of our rich cultural tapestry, we invite you to join us on 2 December 2023 to celebrate and enjoy the stories and traditions woven into every product.”
