Lambeth Libraries has partnered with Black Cultural Archives and many local organisations, along with a selection of brilliant writers and artists, to deliver 2019’s Black History Month programme all over Lambeth through October and into November.

Cllr Sonia Winifred, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Culture said: “Last year, so many of you told us how inspiring and uplifting you found the events and this year’s programme is equally as exciting. This year we continue to remember and support the Windrush generation and acknowledge their struggle for a right to remain and for compensation, and the month includes something for all ages and all tastes. Please take this wonderful opportunity to learn about and celebrate African Caribbean Heritage and Culture, which influence and enrich all our lives.”

- Voices of the Windrush Generation with author and historian Colin Grant 1 October
- 3-day Black Cultural Archives Film festival, 4-6 October
- Pegasus Opera Company – a musical journey at Brixton Library 12 October
- Black Hair Day (12 October) featuring Lorna Jones, author of ‘If Only Hair Could Talk’ and a hair-themes movie at West Norwood Picturehouse
- Launch of Here to Stay, Here to Fight: A Race Today Anthology on Friday 25 October, Brixton Library
- New Black Writers Day 26 October Streatham Library
- Black History Month pop-up market at Pop Brixton, 19 & 20 October
- ‘Tribes’ with David Lammy at Brixton Library 26 October – inspired by David’s DNA test results
- ‘London…is the place for me’ Tribute to Windrush: 26 October, St Martin’s Tulse Hill – song, dance, poetry and more
- Spoken Word Night celebrating Toni Morrison – 1 November Clapham Library
- Coldharbour Project 360 degree virtual reality tour of Brixton 18 to 27 October in Brixton Library
- A Radical Black Sounds Silent Disco (!) with top DJs. Saturday 2 November, 8pm to midnight. Clapham Library
- Sound Systems DIY Culture and 100 years of British Black Music with Lloyd Bradley and Dennis Bovell 8 November Clapham Library – includes chat with guests, film, and specially curated soundtrack
- Throughout the month Lambeth Libraries will host a fantastic list of Black writers including Bernardine Evaristo, Diana Evans, Tayari Jones, Alex Wheatle, Dean Atta, Alexandra Sheppard and Patrice Lawrence.
