Celebrating ‘Age Without Limits’ Day in Lambeth

Lambeth has committed to becoming an age-friendly borough and earlier this year the Age Friendly Action Plan was approved by Lambeth Council’s Cabinet. Age-Friendly Lambeth aims to make Lambeth a place where we can all age well by working together with residents, voluntary and community sector, health and care and other partners.

Challenging ageism through celebrating ageing

Ageism can be a barrier to people ageing well. Ageist ideas and narratives can become internalised, affecting our self-confidence and contribute to barriers we may put on ourselves as we age by influencing what we feel we may be capable of. Ageing and older age can have its challenges, however, being treated negatively because of our age should never be one.

This year, Lambeth is supporting the national campaign ‘Age Without Limits’ which is led by the Centre for Ageing Better. The Centre for Ageing Better run activities throughout the year with the aim of challenging ageism in society but this year the campaign’s main day will take place on  11 June, with the theme of ‘Celebrating Ageing. Challenging Ageism.’

Word from the Cabinet

Cllr Nanda Manley-Browne, Lambeth Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, said: “Older residents are the heart of our communities — they bring wisdom, care, and continuity to our shared lives. Our Age Friendly Strategy is a key part of our vision to make Lambeth a borough where everyone, at every age, can truly feel at home.”

Local partnership

To help celebrate ageing locally, Lambeth Council is working with a local organisation, Team GJC, to run a positive ageing campaign. Team GJC will be capturing experiences and photos of older residents in the borough, finding out more about their experiences of ageing and older age.  A photo library will be produced, capturing photos of residents on their terms and sharing their stories. In doing so, we want to celebrate the experiences of, and contributions made by older residents to Lambeth by sharing their diverse experiences of growing older.

How can I get involved?

If you run or participate in a community event with older residents and you are interested in taking part in the campaign, please reach out to Team GJC.
