They gathered at Jessop Primary School in Herne Hill on Saturday to tear up the old pitch after raising £9,000 from the community with a further £4,000 from the council for the community pitch.
Members of the school’s Parents Teachers Association, the school’s Dad’s Club and the borough’s waste management and street cleansing teams were among those who managed to remove 15 tonnes of artificial turf and underlay in just one day. The voluntary work saved £6,000 meaning the full £13,000 can be spent on resurfacing.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Leisure and Sport, said:
“This project shows Lambeth’s true strength; people coming together to create something better for their community.
“What the school community has achieved for Herne Hill, Brixton and surrounds is inspiring. It’s more than just a new pitch; it’s a powerful example of community-led change and a brighter future for our children.”
The new pitch, due to be installed over the summer holidays, will be a game-changer for Jessop pupils. With a better surface and safer conditions, the space will support year-round sports, PE lessons and playtime boosting fitness, wellbeing and confidence.
