Lambeth has the fourth highest number of rough sleepers in London. Spires homelessness charity set a crowdfunding target of £5,000 to help get more people off the streets and into housing. Crowdfund Lambeth equalled the contributions made by more than 50 community supporters, making sure they beat the target by pledging £2,500 towards the project
Giving more people a home
Many people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage in south London face complex issues such as alcohol or drug dependence or misuse, unemployment, insecure accommodation or health issues, that result or might result in their homelessness.
Rough sleeping in London hit a record high of just under 12,000 in March 2024. In 2023, Spires went from supporting 90 people a month to 160, and is expanding services into new locations, including helping refugees, making sure more people have a place to call home.
Thanks for supporting Spires
Crowdfund campaign organiser Charles Hibbert said: “Spires has been supporting people in Lambeth experiencing homelessness and poverty for 30 years. With homelessness hitting a record London high in the past 12 months, and high numbers high numbers of people experiencing homelessness in Lambeth, Spires needed to expand to support more people to exit homelessness.
“We will use the money raised for running costs at all our Lambeth locations. Raising these funds from Crowdfunder helps provide stability to our services and helps us keep our doors open.
“We are very grateful to have such support helping reduce the number of people experiencing homelessness in the borough.”
