We are proud to announce that in January, Lambeth Council was awarded the Fairtrade Borough status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
Supporting fairtrade
The status is awarded to local authorities that support the work of the Fairtrade Foundation and the uptake of the Fairtrade Mark in their area.
Over the course of last year, the Sustainability Team and the Lambeth Fairtrade Steering Group organised and participated in conferences and events around Fairtrade, across Lambeth schools, community fairs and markets.
The Fairtrade Foundation praised the Team’s and Group’s hard work, and their effort to engage with different community groups and to organise and participate in a high number of events.
Raising awareness
We will need to renew the status in 2022, so over the coming months, we plan to work closely with our staff, residents and community organisations to raise awareness of Fairtrade, and encourage the uptake of the Fairtrade mark across the Borough.
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is a way to ensure that farmers and producers get paid fairly for the products they make and the raw materials they source.
The Fairtrade Foundation sets social, economic and environmental standards that need to be met by the companies, farmers, and workers that grow Fairtrade products. These standards ensure that workers’ rights and the environment are respected.

Thank you
The Sustainability Team would like to thank Lambeth Fairtrade Steering Group, particularly Brixton BID and GSST’s charity, for their continued support and the hard work they put into renewing the status.
Get involved
We would encourage residents, businesses and organisations to support the uptake of the Fairtrade Mark in our Borough. Please contact sustainability@lambeth.gov.uk to find out more about getting involved in our events.
