Lambeth Country Show delivers for the borough

The weather warning issued by the Met Office and heavy rain that followed on Saturday afternoon saw attendance dip on day one, but the numbers came roaring back on Sunday when the sunshine returned.

The event programme which celebrates Lambeth’s diversity, talent and traditions featured everything from sheep shows, gardening displays and jousting, to headline performance by reggae legends Aswad, a LatinoLife stage and a mass participatory ceilidh.

Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said: “I’m delighted that the Lambeth Country Show was a big success this year, and that our communities were able to come out and celebrate the borough we all love.

“We have worked incredibly hard to maintain the country show as a free event, and also to make it a safe event so our young people can let their hair down, relax and have a good time. The show really is the jewel in our annual events calendar.”

This year’s event was the 51st edition of the Lambeth Country Show and saw an estimated total of 80,000 people attend across the weekend.

The show’s ever popular annual vegetable sculpting competition made national and international headlines for its creative and witty entries that covered a whole range of topical subjects, including the papal conclave and a ‘Mo Salad’ version of the Premier League title winning football player.

The show is put on in partnership with Brockwell Live who are fully responsible for any costs to restore the park afterwards. The partnership saved the council £700,000 last year from the cost of putting on the Lambeth Country Show, as well as contributing £317,000 towards park upkeep over the last 5 years via the Park Investment Levy, and to date, more than £150,000 to local community projects.

The Brockwell Live partnership also features the free Brockwell Bounce family event.
