Lambeth: Named best borough for creating a better London

The council won the honour at the NLA Awards which were held on Thursday, November 20 at The Guildhall and have a particular focus on work across London that delivers equity, sustainability and inclusive prosperity.

Growth sectors

In winning the award it was highlighted how this year Lambeth has seen transformative projects brought to life across affordable housing, public realm, climate infrastructure and the borough’s growth sectors.

Cllr Claire Holland, the leader of Lambeth Council, said: “We are delighted to have won this award because it acknowledges our commitment to engaging with our residents and partners on how we can shape change in our borough.

“We are a dynamic, ambitious borough where change is a constant, and we are determined to fully play our role shaping that future. Core to that determination is how we support inclusive growth that ensures that everyone here can contribute to and benefit from the many projects and developments across Lambeth.

“From building new homes or offices, creating new infrastructure, improving the local environment or tackling the climate crisis there are jobs, skills, homes and life benefits that must be shared equally across our communities.”

Brixton Rec

The council’s Brixton Recreation Centre and public realm projects were also hailed as winners at the awards, being named as best cultural project of the year.

The award acknowledged how Brixton Rec’s public space, facade and unused spaces were reimagined with new workspaces, lighting, and signage, honouring its legacy and emphasising its role as a community and sports hub.

The judges noted when naming Lambeth as Borough of the Year that community engagement had been central to shaping the council’s plans, and also how well young people had been included in the development of place projects.

The council’s award entry included the pioneering SC1 London health and life sciences centre on the South Bank, its £1billion new homes programme and the collaboration work taking place on the future or Waterloo train station and its surrounding area.
