Lambeth Council has welcomed news that work has started on a £5.8million refurbishment of an important adult education centre in the borough that pledges to create a lasting legacy for future generations of adult learners.
The work is being carried out at the Waterloo Centre for Adult Education in Westminster Bridge Road which is run by Morley College London, and the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Morley College run adult learning courses for the council at the Waterloo site, and also a second location in Stockwell providing a wide range of learning, well-being and career development opportunities for Lambeth residents.

Cllr Marcia Cameron, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Economic Inclusion, said: “I’m delighted that this work has started and will ensure our adult learners have access to the facilities they both need, and deserve.
“The College has delivered adult learning in Lambeth since the 1970s, extending learning opportunities and pathways for Lambeth communities facing personal, social and economic barriers to education.
“The community learning department the council funds in Waterloo, as well as Stockwell, are tailored to meet local needs and are run to ensure all our residents are able to improve both their wellbeing and their employment situation – helping to make Lambeth a borough of equity and justice.”
Community learning
The Community Learning department offer covers digital literacy, family learning, health & wellbeing, creative crafts, English as a second language courses and vocational learning training. There are extra courses designed for visually impaired learners and those recovering from strokes.
Morley College London was awarded the £5.8m in funding by the Department for Education’s Further Education Capital Improvement Fund to improve and refurbish the Waterloo Centre.
The work includes insulating and refurbishing the roof, and transforming the Waterloo Centre’s energy efficiency under a college-wide drive to achieve net zero by 2040. The refurbishment will also sensitively modernise the Centre’s main performance space and improve accessibility.
