Hundreds of Lambeth pupils were celebrating after securing the grades they needed to take the next step in their education, or into the world of work.
As the Government announced that record numbers of English 18-year-olds received their first choice of university, a number of Lambeth schools reported some impressive overall figures – and individual performances.
Students at Norwood School achieved the highest number of A*s it had ever recorded – and some subjects, including Film Studies, recorded their first-ever A* grades.
Lilian Baylis Technology School (LBTS) reported “a great results day”, with nearly a fifth of A Level grades overall at A* or A. Almost 40 per cent of Maths students achieved grade A*.
Elmgreen School said its results showed “a positive improvement from last year”. Headteacher Dominic Bergin added: “We are particularly pleased with the increase in our A and A* grades and the fantastic outcomes from our BTEC qualifications.”
Elsewhere, one Lambeth care-leaver gained grades of A*, A, A and confirmed their place studying BA (Hons) Education at Cambridge University.
At The Norwood School, Sylvia Hagiu and Esme Bailey each got 3A*s, and Sylvia secured her place studying Medicine at Kings College. Amilie Law White will also be studying Medicine – at Kent Medway – after posting AAA.
Gwenver Griffin Smith secured her place at Cambridge studying Human, Social, and Political Sciences with A*AA. Zaid Al-Ani got A* A* A
Albert Borger is off to Liverpool to Study Computer Science, after getting an A* in Art, A in Maths and a Distinction* in IT BTEC.
Richard Cole and Niki Clemenger, the Norwood School headteachers said: “We’re really pleased with the results. We have received the highest number of A*s we have ever had, and it looks as though we have around 38% of all results A-A* and 65% A*-B.
“Two students achieved 3A*s. Currently around 75% of students have received a confirmation of a place at their first choice university including one at Cambridge and two at medical school.”
Lilian Baylis reported that:
- 80% of students applying to university have received offers from their first choices
- 70% of the cohort achieved at least 2 grades at A*-C or Distinction*-Merit
- 11 students (15% of the A Level cohort) achieved at least 2 grade As or A*s
- 10% of the entire cohort) achieved all As & A*s or Distinction/ Distinction* across every subject
A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “These results demonstrate once again the remarkable commitment and determination of the young people of our borough. They are a testament to the dedication of all the young people, along with their families and teachers, who have worked so hard to achieve this success. They are all a credit to Lambeth.
“We offer them our warm congratulations, whether they are staying in education or moving into work. They all have bright futures ahead of them, and we wish them every success.”
