The money includes almost £1million to make bus journeys through Lambeth quicker, through the borough’s Bus Priority Corridor programme, focusing on roads where bus journeys are typically below London’s average speed targets.
Eight areas in the borough have schemes in development with measures proposed that are backed by better management of roadworks, and seeking to make bus lanes more effective by removing blockages.
There is also new funding to support a council pledged made earlier this year to have School Streets at every Lambeth primary schools, other than those on main roads, to protect pupils, staff, and parents from air pollution and reduce road danger during busy times.
Finally, the funding announcement for Local Implementation Plans which set out how each London borough will meet the objectives of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, includes money for cycle lane improvements and some extra cash for road maintenance.
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Deputy leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said: “We welcome this support from City Hall for our ambitious programmes to make our borough streets safer, to clean our polluted air and to make it easier for residents to walk, cycle or use public transport in their everyday lives.
“We know the most liveable cities, with the strongest and healthiest communities, are those with good green spaces, strongly connected neighbourhoods and good access to public services. Our work to improve local transport is an important element in making Lambeth a better place to live, to raise a family and do business.”
