Local voices shine in new film about Lambeth Made Safer

The film has been made as part of an independent evaluation of Lambeth Made Safer for Young People – a long-term strategy launched by Lambeth Council in 2020 to reduce serious youth violence. The strategy takes a public health and anti-racist approach, bringing together local organisations and communities.

Commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in partnership with Lambeth Council, and delivered by PHIRST South Bank at London South Bank University, the evaluation looked at how the strategy was developed and delivered in its early stages, from 2018 to 2023.

The evaluation found strong community involvement, alignment with national guidelines, and areas of cost-effective practice that Lambeth can build on, especially in early intervention and relationship-based work like parenting support and youth engagement.

To bring these voices to life, PHIRST has released a short film featuring poetry by local artist Binta Yade, shaped from real interviews with Lambeth residents involved in youth violence reduction.

Cllr Dr Mahamed Hashi, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: “This evaluation gives us a clearer picture of how Lambeth Made Safer is working – and where we can go further.

“It shows the value of listening to our communities and using evidence to shape services that are inclusive, effective and rooted in trust.”
