The project has created distinctive signage on Wilcox Road, creating a gateway between the Nine Elms Tube Station and Wilcox Road. The aim is to increase footfall to the local independent shops and strengthen east-west pedestrian connections between South Lambeth Road and Nine Elms via Arch 42.
The winning architecture firm NOOMA Studio worked with over 100 residents and businesses over the duration of the project to ensure that the final designs reflected the market heritage of the road, along with the influence of the existing Portuguese local community.
The completed works now include a trade-focused mural, seven painted lamp columns and banners, and an illuminated Wilcox Road gateway sign at the start of the street.
Councillor Donatus Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said:“Significant transport infrastructure should not only improve connectivity, but also actively support the small businesses and communities that give our neighbourhoods their unique character.
“I am delighted to see these creative and engaging signs on Wilcox Road, which showcase the long-standing independent businesses in the area. They serve both to attract footfall from Nine Elms Station and to reflect the strong cultural influence of our Portuguese community.
“I encourage everyone passing through Nine Elms to take a moment to visit Wilcox Road and support our valued local businesses.”
The Wilcox Road public realm improvements were part of the Section 106 planning agreement as part of the wider Nine Elms Regeneration.
