Plans for a new traffic filter at the junction of Palace Road and Leigham Vale, part of the Streatham Hill LTN, have been published by Lambeth Council.
The tweak to the existing scheme follows traffic monitoring which showed a significant increase in cut-through traffic on sections of Palace Road and Probyn Road since the scheme was last assessed, with over 3,700 vehicles a day passing down Palace Road. Speeding is a real concern for local residents, with close to 40% of vehicles on Probyn Road breaking the limit, and 29% on Palace Road.
Councillor Rezina Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Clean Air and Sustainable Lambeth said:
“Road danger and speeding are some of the top issues that residents talk to me about and the council is absolutely clear that we will take action to keep people safe.
“We know that the Palace Road-Probyn Road cut-through is used by too many people to avoid the traffic lights on the gyratory. It’s not fair for small local streets to be used like this.”
The introduction of a new filter follows a statutory consultation on the proposals that took place earlier this year.
The new camera-enforced traffic filter will limit passing traffic to cyclists, pedestrians and exempted vehicles, including the emergency services and Blue Badge Holders with an approved dispensation. The filter aims to reduce traffic and road danger, creating a safe environment for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
Overall, across the Streatham Hill LTN area, traffic monitoring on the scheme has previously shown a 5% decrease in traffic across internal and adjacent main roads, with a 54% drop in traffic on internal roads. Cycling levels have also increased significantly since the LTN was introduced, including on Palace Road.
The filter will be implemented using cost effective, durable materials, and will include new planting and bike parking. The costs of the changes will be funded by a Transport for London grant.
