School art in Lambeth Town Hall shows what ‘Community as a Superpower’ means

‘Community as a Superpower’ is the theme of World Refugee Week. An exhibition of artwork by pupils from Lambeth schools shows what that can mean to different people.

Schools of Sanctuary are a growing network of more than 1200 primary and secondary schools, nurseries and sixth forms all committed to building a kinder, more welcoming culture for those forced to flee their home country.

Three of Lambeth’s Sanctuary Schools have shared pupil’s ideas of ‘community as a superpower’ for a week-long show in Lambeth Town Hall.

  • Bonneville Primary School said: “For us, the theme means that we are stronger together and together we can achieve amazing things, just like superheroes. It led to lots of discussions on the importance of community. It has also been a way of showing our support of sanctuary seekers at school and in the wider community.”
  • The Norwood School said: “All our year 8 students designed posters related to their individual interpretations of the ” Community as a Superpower” theme.
  • Sunnyhill Primary School said: “We saw the theme as an embodiment of our school’s five Core Values, in particular ‘Respect Each Other’ and ‘Every Individual Matters’. The children decided individually which words and phrases they felt were important to describe what our community looks and feels like. It’s a lovely way for our children from refugee families to feel included and a part of our community. We believe everyone is welcome in our community, no matter their background, everyone is valued and everyone can contribute. It is our diverse and unified community, with everyone learning, playing and growing together, that is our superpower.”
