Local funding has now been secured, £75,000 for an Option Selection Report, the first formal stage required to unlock Department for Transport funds for the construction of step-free access at the station.
Network Rail is set to begin this essential design work in spring 2026, which will consider the best technical solution to make the station fully accessible. The study is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.
The council has played a central role in pushing the project forward, including previously funding a desktop study that helped secure Section 106 contributions from developers.
Loughborough Junction Station currently has no step-free access between platforms. This creates barriers for disabled people, older residents, parents with young children and anyone with mobility challenges.
In a borough where most journeys are made by walking, cycling and public transport, accessible rail stations are essential.
A Word from Cabinet
Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Lambeth’s Deputy leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said:
“This is an important step towards the aim we share with our residents to get step-free access into Loughborough Junction Station.
“We look forward to working with local people as this project progresses.
“As a borough where most journeys are made by walking, cycling and public transport, projects like this are essential.”
An Option Selection Report will now be produced by Network Rail and will be used to secure further Government funding needed to complete the project.
