‘I am your Neighbour’ is a celebration of London, Brixton, neighbours and the unexpected friendships we make living side by side.
In 2017 Ovalhouse will be moving to its new home in Brixton as part of Future Brixton’s Somerleyton Road project. This week long festival is a creative introduction from the young people involved in Truth About Youth to their new neighbours. We look forward to meeting you.
Here are some of the highlights.
Neighbourhood Watch
Young writers are creating the story line and dialogue for Neighbourhood Watch, an original play that will be a unique evening of eavesdropping and insight into a community. The venue will be completely transformed by our design team who are already grafting hard in the studios creating set and props. Neighbourhood Watch will be written and performed by Truth about Youth writers and actors and showing at 7pm on Friday 25 July at Brixton East.
Our Four Walls
An opportunity to step through the front door and into the lives people within the four walls of their homes. Six short plays, written and performed by Truth about Youth writers and actors will explore the real lives of young people living in Brixton in these one-off performances inside local houses.
Performances take place Wednesday 23 and Thursday 25 July at 7.30pm and Saturday 26 July at 2.30pm.
Live Night
The youth drama group are exploring Brixton of old, before Electric Avenue was even named after the first electric lights went on and even further back to when Brixistan, meaning the stone of Brixi, a Saxon lord. Brixi is thought to have erected a boundary stone to mark an ancient meeting place (fact of the day anyone?!?).
Fast forward to the future and we are programming a line up of brilliant contemporary artists for our special I Am Your Neighbour Live Night! Hosted and curated by the A and the E collective, it doesn’t get cooler than this crew of eclectic DJs, poets and musicians.
Come along and celebrate the festival and get in the mood for the weekend at 8pm on Friday 25 July at Brixton East.
Photo Booth
Our top team of producers have been in Brixton scoping the venues (tip of the hour: Don’t wear skinny jeans in the blazing Brixton heat!) and all is set for our pop-up photography studio with Photo Fusion and any budding young photographers out there (on Wednesday 23 July at 12 noon).
Getting ready and keeping in touch …
Our Young Associates have been taking part in vlogging workshops with Media Trust and are now busy preparing to take their new skills to the streets of Brixton. Over the coming weeks, check out our Twitter and Facebook for vox pops and vlogs from Brixton residents and the young people taking part in the festival.
As you can see there is loads going on and it’s only going to get crazier! Keep an eye on our twitter @TAYLondon1 and instagram: taylondon1 for more updates and check out the Ovalhouse website for the full listings.
