The London Borough of Lambeth has again done brilliantly at the London in Bloom Awards for 2024, with 14 Golds, 9 Silver Gilts and one Silver Award, as well as special awards recognising individuals and sites for providing Lambeth’s residents and communities with beautiful, safe, sustainable and diverse parks and public spaces to visit, use and enjoy.
Green and bright
London in Bloom started in 1967. Its annual awards recognise the work that goes into improving the local environment. Winning a Gold means that LIB judges score a green space 85% or more of a possible 200 points; Silver Gilt means scoring 70% to 84%.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllrs Fred Cowell and Nanda Manley-Browne, Lambeth’s Cabinet Members for Equalities, Governance and Change, said: “We’ve heard the visiting judges had plenty of positive feedback about what Lambeth is doing collectively to champion London in Bloom and everything it stands for. There’s evidence suggesting that well-managed and attractive places significantly increase the economic well-being of our town centres. These awards are a visual reminder of both how amazing Lambeth’s Parks Service is –never forgetting the expertise and tireless work that Friends and community volunteers bring to keeping Lambeth’s green spaces award-winners.”
Winners in Lambeth
Highlights for Lambeth in 2024 include:
- Silver Gilt Award and Winner awards in the ‘City’ Category.
- ‘Gardener of the Year’ Award, supported by the Royal Parks Guild, for Lambeth’s Helen Mackenzie – who started her gardening career as a Lambeth apprentice.
- Repeated Gold wins in categories across the board including Commons (Streatham and Clapham), Small, Medium and Large Parks (including Brockwell, Myatt’s Fields and Ruskin Parks), Churchyards (St John’s Waterloo) and Cemeteries (West Norwood), and Conservation and Heritage areas (such as Vauxhall and Kennington Walled Gardens).
- Streatham Common Cooperative (SCCoop) became the first to ever win a Gold ‘Small Park of the Year’ Award for three years running, for The Rookery Gardens, and won the ‘Chairman’s Award of the Year’ – the first time any Lambeth green space has ever won this coveted award. “A huge thank you to all our volunteers, from the Streatham Common Community to Corporate Groups and everyone in between, we’re delighted their efforts have been recognised and celebrated with such a special award.”
