One of South London’s most popular swimming and sports facilities will come under new management from 1 July, as Lambeth Council’s in‑house health and leisure service, Active Lambeth, takes responsibility for the 89-year-old lido.
The council is backing the lido with over £250,000 of investment to enhance facilities and improve the experience for the local community, particularly the gym, which will be refitted with brand new sports equipment. The transition is a significant moment for one of South London’s most iconic leisure spaces, combining its rich heritage with new investment, improved facilities and greater access for residents.
Major investment and improvements
As part of the move, the lido will benefit from a major gym refurbishment, including over £250,000 investment in;
- new state‑of‑the‑art Pulse Fitness equipment
- a refreshed strength and dedicated functional training space
- brand-new flooring for a safer, more modern gym environment
- pool improvements, including new lane ropes
These upgrades are part of Lambeth Council’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, accessible fitness facilities for residents across the borough.
Councillor Natalie Kane, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Democracy and Culture, said:
“Brockwell Lido is a vital community asset and we’re proud to be bringing it back in-house, as part of the Active Lambeth family.
The lido is an inclusive, welcoming space that offers more than just exercise, it’s a social space for the community year around, from hardy winter swimmers, to kids and families cooling off on long summer days.
This is an iconic building that is cherished by the people who use it. We’re excited to be investing in the Lido so visitors have modern facilities that support health and wellbeing for everyone.”
Supporting members through the transition
From 1 July, existing memberships will automatically transfer to Active Lambeth, with direct debits continuing seamlessly and no action required from members. Members will also benefit from:
- access to the Active Lambeth app for bookings, updates and entry via digital QR code
- a range of exclusive member perks, including offers, events, priority booking and promotions
- use of multiple leisure centres across Lambeth as part of the wider offer
Temporary works and continued access
To enable the improvements, the gym will undergo a short closure period from 1 July, while installation works take place. The works are expected to take approximately two weeks.
The lido will remain open for swimming and group exercise classes are expected to continue as normal. To help gym users stay active during the works, Fusion members will be able access to other Active Lambeth leisure centres for gym and classes. Nearby Active Lambeth centres include Herne Hill Lifestyle Centre, Brixton Recreation Centre and West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre.
Active Lambeth staff will also be on-site at the lido in the coming weeks to support members, answer questions and share plans for the upgraded facilities.
Looking ahead
The transition introduces a stronger, more connected leisure offer for residents with improved facilities, new technology, enhanced member benefits and greater access across the borough.
Active Lambeth is encouraging residents to visit, get active and be part of this new chapter as Brockwell Lido continues to evolve for future generations.
