Many people have a New Year’s resolution to get fitter and healthier for the coming year. We’re only half way into January and some of us are already finding excuses to go back to our old ways!

One of the easiest ways to check your health is to have a free NHS Health Check.

Do The Right Thing and get your health check in 2015

Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Adedemola Aminu, has had his and urges other eligible Lambeth residents to follow in his footsteps.

‘I’ve had my health check and am glad I did. It’s given me peace of mind and has made me more confident about my health. It also gave me the chance to chat to the specialist nurses and get personalised advice about my lifestyle.’

If you are over 40, with no underlying conditions, health checks act as an MOT to detect potential health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It includes tests for blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI and gives you personalised advice on how to reduce the risk of developing problems.  Call the NHS Health Check Nurses on 020 3049 5257 or visit www.healthcheck.nhs.uk for more information

To help you do the right thing and get back on track, here are a few more simple things you can do to make a difference to your health and wellbeing:

  • Get out and about more  Lambeth has a great choice of parks and open spaces. We also have four outdoor gyms that are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels
  • Get walking  This is one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Lambeth has an active walks scheme that has free weekly walks all year round. For more information contact the Lambeth healthy lifestyles team on 020 7926 0761, email healthylifestyles@lambeth.gov.uk or visit www.lambeth.gov.uk/healthylifestyles
  • Take up running  Brockwell Park has a weekly Parkrun every Saturday at 9am and a junior Parkrun (4 to 14 years) every Saturday at 9.30am. These are suitable for beginners. To find out more visit www.parkrun.or.uk/brockwell
  • Join a leisure centre  We have centres at Brixton, Streatham, Clapham and Norwood. They offer activities for all age ranges and flexible memberships including the REAL plus card which gives you discounted access to activities without the monthly direct debit commitment. Visit www.lambeth.gov.uk and search for ‘REAL plus leisure card’.

If you are a Norwood resident, look out for special health check sessions across February. The health check team will be out and about making sure you are as well as can be and offering advice on how you can improve your lifestyle. Keep an eye on Love Lambeth for more details or contact communications@lambeth.gov.uk for more information.
