The covered markets in Brixton have today formally added to Lambeth Council’s Asset of Community Value list. When listed places come up for sale the right gives communities that want it six months to put together a bid to buy it.
The new status adds Brixton Village and Market Row to the borough’s list which gives communities a better chance to own local facilities of community value.
Word from the Cabinet
Cllr Martin Abrams, the Leader of Lambeth Council, said: “This is a big step forward for the campaign for community ownership which aims to safeguard Brixton’s heritage, and I am pleased the council has swiftly taken this important step.
“The Advocacy Academy and the Brixton Traders & Community Association have set a really ambitious vision, and I’m strongly supporting this campaign because Brixton Village and Market Row are the beating heart of Brixton.
“They’re hugely valued by our diverse communities, and have been shaped by generations of traders, creatives and entrepreneurs from our borough.
“This is a once in a generation opportunity for community action to ensure this cherished local asset is held in local hands. I’m thrilled that, by approving this application, our administration has given the community this opportunity.”
The application for the asset of community value was lodged by the Stour Trust, who support community campaigns in relation to buildings, was assessed by officers across the council before being approved.
Brixton Village and Market Row new status will be published online on Lambeth’s register of asset of community value decisions made in the last five years. For more information visit lambeth.gov.uk.
