Make the New Year your stop smoking time

The new national stop smoking campaign seeks to capitalise on the New Year moment when there is greater intent for smokers to make a quit attempt and promotes the many benefits of quitting.

The campaign builds on the theme of ‘good things happen when you stop smoking’ that was developed for this year’s Stoptober campaign back in October. Within days or weeks without smoking your senses of taste and smell improve, you start breathing more easily and have more energy. In time, your longer-term risks of cancer, lung disease, heart disease and stroke reduce significantly.

Looks out for the campaign on TV, video-on-demand, radio, out-of-home advertising and search. There will also be a national PR moment on 28 December focusing on the generational harms of smoking, highlighting that children are up to three times as likely to start smoking if their parents smoke.

The campaign also focuses on vaping to help smokers quit. The campaign will challenge the myth that vaping is as harmful, or more, than tobacco.

Lambeth’s local campaign signposts to the range of quitting support and information available for residents.

Word from the NHS

Dr Raj Mitra, Lambeth’s Staying Healthy Clinical Lead said: “This New Year I am encouraging smokers in Lambeth to use our local stop smoking services to make a quit attempt, because people trying to stop smoking are 4 times more likely to succeed with structured treatment than if they ‘go it alone’.”
